Who administers child care subsidy for Charlotte-area families?

Mecklenburg County's Department of Social Services administers subsidy and contracts with Child Care Resources Inc. (CCRI); families can call 704-336-3000. In Union, Cabarrus and Gaston, the county social services agency takes applications.

Eligibility has two parts: a situational need such as work, school or job training, and an income test set by the state. The parent fee is a percentage of gross monthly income, currently 10% where it applies, and families involved with CPS, CWS or foster care are exempt.

Can subsidy pay for a private school's preschool or aftercare?

Yes, when the program participates in the subsidy system. Subsidy fills the gap the Opportunity Scholarship leaves: younger siblings, the 3-year-old year and before- and after-school hours.
