What curriculum can a Charlotte ESA+ family buy?
ESA+ buys ready-to-use curriculum in math, science, English language arts, social studies and foreign language from the ClassWallet Marketplace. Core-subject curriculum counts toward the $500 academic rule; foreign language is allowed but does not count.
Through the ClassWallet Marketplace; companies on SEAA's Curricula Provider List can still be used for now.
Only when the private school requires the materials and bills them as a fee.
What are the ESA+ rules for curriculum?
- Kits must be complete; you cannot assemble your own kit from separate parts.
- Educational toys, puzzles and games count only with a lesson plan, teacher guide or assignments, or when their main purpose is education.
- Pre-loaded, closed-system learning tablets are treated as curriculum; audiobooks only when bought through the Marketplace.
- Textbooks count when a home or private school requires them in a core subject.
Allowed vs not allowed
| ESA+ can pay for | ESA+ cannot pay for |
|---|---|
| Complete core-subject curriculum kits | Music, art and PE curricula |
| Foreign-language curriculum (allowed, not counted) | Ordinary LEGO, building blocks, magnetic tiles and playsets |
| Core textbooks a school requires | Cooking curricula, live animals and aquariums |
| Closed-system learning tablets | Paper, pens, planners, printer ink and other consumables |
How does this work for a Charlotte-area family?
Charlotte home-school families often build a year around a boxed core curriculum and then use what is left for tutoring or therapy.
