Can ESA+ buy a laptop or assistive device for a Charlotte student?
Yes, with limits. ESA+ can buy one computer, one general-purpose tablet, one interactive whiteboard and one pair of headphones every three years, plus assistive technology such as screen readers, Braille displays, FM systems and speech-generating devices. Technology does not count toward the $500 academic rule.
Device limits apply; accessories and warranties must be ordered within 30 days of the device.
Not payable unless the school requires the device and bills it as a fee.
What are the ESA+ rules for technology purchases?
- Educational apps are not sold on the Marketplace; SEAA must approve an app before you buy it to be reimbursed.
- Sensory items are limited to five tactile fidgets and five chews per order.
- Service plans count only when bought within 30 days of the approved device order.
Allowed vs not allowed
| ESA+ can pay for | ESA+ cannot pay for |
|---|---|
| One computer, tablet, whiteboard and headset every three years | Internet or cell service |
| Screen readers, Braille displays, FM systems and speech devices | Projectors, game consoles, smart speakers, smart watches, phones, e-readers and calculators |
| SEAA-approved educational apps | Repairs, installation, used or leased devices, and sales tax |
| Warranties bought within 30 days of the device | Word processing, antivirus and operating-system software |
How does this work for a Charlotte-area family?
For a student with a visual or hearing impairment, the higher $17,000 award plus these assistive categories can be what makes a private placement workable.
