Can ESA+ pay a tutor or music teacher in Charlotte?
Yes. ESA+ pays live, in-person or online tutoring from SEAA-enrolled providers. Core-subject tutoring counts toward the $500 academic rule; art, music and foreign-language lessons, newly allowed from fall 2026, do not.
Live (not recorded) instruction only, from an enrolled provider.
Not payable.
What are the ESA+ rules for tutoring and lessons?
- Visual arts, dance, theater and individual or group music lessons qualify, including classes and camps from enrolled providers.
- Support from a one-to-one classroom aide may be considered under program guidelines.
- The statute also allows tutoring and teaching services from an individual or facility accredited by a state, regional or national accrediting body.
Allowed vs not allowed
| ESA+ can pay for | ESA+ cannot pay for |
|---|---|
| Live core-subject tutoring, in person or online | Art and music supplies, instruments' consumables and curricula |
| Visual art, dance, theater and music lessons | Membership, travel and competition fees |
| Camps and classes from enrolled art and music providers | Martial arts, gymnastics, cheer and other athletic classes |
How does this work for a Charlotte-area family?
Reading and math tutoring is the usual core-subject buy for a Charlotte ESA+ student; a weekly piano or art class can now sit in the same account.
